Where is Camp Monroe located?
Camp Monroe is located on 200 beautiful acres in the Catskill Mountains of New York and a short 1 hour drive from New York City.
This will be my first experience with Camp Monroe. Can I talk with one of your current camp parents?
Of course! You can find a list of Camp Monroe Representatives along with their email addresses and phone numbers on this website. Feel free to contact any of them.
How about the food? Will Camp Monroe accommodate my child’s special diet needs?
Camp Monroe serves the highest quality, strictly kosher food. In addition to our regularly planned menu, there are also a number of substitutes offered for the picky eaters and those with special dietary needs. We will certainly try to accommodate your child’s special diet need or restriction. Please let us know what considerations your child requires and we will do everything possible to ensure that he/she gets everything required.
Can I expect to receive mail from my child when he or she is at camp?
Yes, we encourage campers to communicate using the old fashion way, letter writing. We try to have your child write each week while they are at camp. We do not open your child’s mail to you so we cannot always guarantee that there will actually be a letter inside of the envelope you receive. If you let us know that you have not received mail we will try to get your child to write.
How do I contact my child at camp?
It's hard to find time to answer the phone when you're riding a horse or swimming! However, we will allow calls to your child after the first 2 weeks at camp and only at specified times during the day. We recommend that parents write to their child throughout the summer. If we see that your child is not getting any mail we will call you. We also have a one way e-mailing service available for parents to communicate with their children. Emails are printed daily and distributed with the regular camper mail. To send you child an email during the summer season click here email.
How will my child's laundry get done?
Campers should have enough clothing and bed linens with them to last at least 10 days. Laundry is sent out of camp once a week and returned washed, dried and folded. It is important to label all clothing and equipment with your child’s name.
When can we visit?
The only time your child can have visitors is on Visiting Day. Parents and other visitors at any other time tend to interrupt the flow of camp. Also other campers would find it difficult if one of their bunkmates had a visitor and they did not. Please be sensitive to the needs of all of our community, we ask for your understanding with this policy.
What is the camper to staff ratio?
The total camp to staff ratio is 3 to 1. This includes counselors, instructors, and administrators. The actual bunk ratio is approximately 9 or 10 campers to 3 staff, 2 counselors and 1 instructor.
What happens if my child gets sick or injured at camp?
The health, safety and medical care of every child is THE # 1 priority. We have 3 full-time registered nurses and a physician who live in camp 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the entire summer. Parents are always called when a child stays overnight in the health center, needs to see a specialist, or needs to be started on prescription medication. The parents or emergency contact is called immediately in the event of an injury. Should your child become ill they will be escorted to the health center by their counselor at any time. Because Stanley and Hope live year round at Camp Monroe they are on a personal relationship with all of the top local doctors and specialists who will always make themselves available when Hope calls. The fact that Stanley and Hope have seven of their own children has helped to develop a special relationship with the area doctors.
What if my child needs medication at camp?
The Health Center will administer any medication that your child may take on a daily or as needed basis. Children receive routine medications at mealtime and bedtime according to the documentation on their health history.
